W.J. Sanders, Australia’s oldest restorative gold and silversmiths, recently had the privilege of restoring an exquisite Spanish tabernacle; an early 20th-century masterpiece featuring a striking Resurrection scene flanked by saints.
Crafted from a combination of silver plate and solid sterling silver, with 22ct gold plating on the interior, this tabernacle embodies the rich Spanish tradition of ecclesiastical artistry. Time had taken its toll, but through the skilled hands of our artisans, its sacred beauty has been meticulously revived.
The restoration began with careful disassembly, ensuring every element was documented for precise reassembly. The aged lacquer was gently removed, revealing the original metalwork beneath. A chemical cleanse eliminated years of oxidation and grime, preparing the surfaces for the next stage of revival.
The sterling silver figurines, worn by time, were meticulously re-polished and patinated to accentuate their intricate details. Silver-plated components were re-plated to restore their brilliance, and a final protective coating was applied to ensure the renewed finish endures.
As the final pieces were reassembled, the transformation was breathtaking. A once-faded treasure now stands resplendent, its sacred purpose restored, ready once again to house the Eucharist in divine splendour. This restoration is a testament to the craftsmanship, tradition, and dedication that define W.J. Sanders.
