Hidden Beauty Revealed: Restoring the Charm of Century-Old Keepsakes

Despite their size, restoring a trio of tortoiseshell trinket boxes from the early 1900s was no small feat.

At W.J. Sanders, we recently restored three early 1900s trinket boxes, each one a small but striking example of timeless design and expert craftsmanship.

Two combine sterling silver bases with tortoiseshell lids inlaid with fine silver. The third is entirely tortoiseshell, hand-carved and rich in detail. Once prized for its beauty and versatility, tortoiseshell was often used in small, luxurious objects like snuff boxes and jewellery cases. Its warmth, depth and workability made it a favourite for intricate pieces.

To revive these treasures, we gently polished the tortoiseshell to restore its natural lustre. The silver was straightened and carefully de-dented, and each interior was relined for a clean, refined finish. All work was completed by hand, using time-honoured techniques that respect the character and age of each piece.

Whether restoring a national trophy, a family keepsake or an ecclesiastic object of deep significance, our approach is always the same; expert care, enduring quality, and the satisfaction of seeing something exceptional brought back to life. At W.J. Sanders, we don’t just restore pieces, we preserve legacies. Whether it’s a sacred artifact, a cherished heirloom, or a treasured piece of history, our expert artisans are dedicated to ensuring its story continues for generations to come.
